Metallic Red—Author Jennifer Ann Shore

Metallic Red—Author Jennifer Ann Shore is Just Getting Started…

I met author Jennifer Ann Shore when she was a senior at Kent State University and editor-in-chief of the University’s student-produced magazine The Burr. It was 2011, and I was fulfilling my MFA internship requirement by working with Jennifer on the magazine.

Fast forward four years and I traveled for work to New York City, where Jennifer and I reconnected. We met at Grand Central Station—had lunch near Bryant Park—browsed in Filene’s Basement—walked to The Metropolitan Museum of Art…and, throughout it all, she shared stories and insights (including the tidbit that avenues run north to south and streets run east to west…Who knew?!). It was one of the most fun, entertaining, and illuminating afternoons I had had in years, with our connection—although restrained by distance—never faltering since that day.

During the years that I have known her, Jennifer has sharpened her writing pencil to become a prolific and best-selling author of several fiction novels, most recently Metallic Red. This book is good—it’s better than “good” with its half human-half vampire protagonist, Mina. I love books that feature strong, capable, intelligent women, which is exactly what/who Mina is. No shrinking violet—swooning heroine—pathetic wallflower here!

In short order, Mina takes a clear-eyed view of her situation—tackles the challenges in front of her—and makes decisions about her life. Of course, there are the expected struggles and second guessing and worries, but—overall—Mina is in charge of her own future, and she knows it.

In Mina I see flashes of Jennifer: smart, strong, capable, intelligent, perceptive, savvy. Here is a writer who is honing her craft and skill while also taking charge of the aspects of publishing that once belonged to the domain of a publisher’s marketing arm. She knows how to spin a good yarn and also knows how to promote the fruit of her toils. I know that she is now working on a new novel, and I can’t wait to get my hands on it. The great thing (for me) is knowing that I will be reading books by Jennifer Ann Shore for many years to come.

Write on!
