The Night Circus

In my last blog post, I mentioned that I love works of fiction. And, so, even though I typically focus on poetry
in this blog, I find myself thinking about one of my favorite books: The Night Circus by Erin Morganstern
(published in 2011 by Doubleday).

There is nothing that I don’t love about this book. Plus, the audio book is magical—recorded by the
incomparable Jim Dale (who narrated all of the Harry Potter books). Set in Victorian London, The Night Circus
tells the tale of Celia and Marco—magicians who are compelled to enter into a competition against each other
(it’s complicated). The circus that they create—it appears suddenly and disappears just as quickly, is open only
during the nighttime, is void of color with its black-and-white motif, and has a cast of unforgettable
characters—is beautiful and dangerous.

Please read this book! And then join me in a conversation about it. Like the rêveurs (“dreamers”) who follow The Night Circus from city to city—country to country—I long to connect with other readers who have been captivated by it. And, while you are at it, try Morgenstern’s newest novel The Starless Sea (published in 2019
by Penguin Randomhouse…but, sadly, not narrated by Jim Dale in the audio book).
