Murky
The pandemic had just begun to take a firm hold on our country, and my husband and I were watching the WKYC Channel 3 weather report. As if COVID-19 weren’t bad enough, that particular Ohio day was gray and dank. If you are from—or ever lived in—Ohio, you know what I’m talking about!
The one bright spot was the person delivering the inclement-weather news: WKYC Chief Meteorologist Betsy Kling.
With her adorable smile and cheery disposition, we could almost celebrate the increasingly dreadful weather headed our way. Plus and as was often the case, my husband phoned his mom immediately after the weather forecast so they could “compare notes” on Betsy’s fashion choice for the evening (somehow they find her outfits to be inspiring...sometimes an enthusiastic “thumbs up” and sometimes a rueful “thumbs down”).
I also was inspired by Betsy...inspired enough to write a little poem called “Murky”...
The weather girl stands inside the TV,
forecasting unstoppable weather.
Murky today—and tomorrow, she says,
will be drizzly and drear beyond measure.I think I might cry at her cheeky bright smile
and predictions of gloomy horizons.
Give me sunshine instead and warm temps overhead
(that’s my prayer for a change in the season).Still I’m stuck in the much of this nor-easter rut
of dim days that bring dank, drenching rainfall.
I must weather this weather from inside my house
reading books—drinking tea—wearing sweaters.
This little poem now is a part of my book of poems for children entitled The Galloping Garbage Truck (Kelsay Books). All I can say is...Thanks, Betsy! Keep those weather reports coming...
